Supporting excellence in military education through comprehensive information resources
Background
Malawi Defence Force Command and Staff College (MDFCSC) library and resource center was established in 2021 along with the establishment of the college and serves as an information hub for student officers. The library has about over 2500 print titles and also has access to databases in which includes electronic books and journals. The library is a member of a local consortium called the Malawi Library and Information Consortium (MALICO) which subscribes to electronic resources. Through this consortium, the College enjoys access to about 30 international databases of full text electronic information resources.
Library Resources
Print Collection
MDFCSC library embraces a hybrid collection comprising print and electronic resources. The print collection includes books, magazines, journals, reference sources (dictionaries, maps, etc.). Although this is a military institution, the library stocks a wide variety of books that cover other subjects.
Electronic Resources
Through MALICO, the library provides access to over 30 international databases of full text electronic information resources, including e books and e journals.
Modern Library Systems
KOHA Library Management System
The library is automated and uses KOHA, an integrated Library Management System. KOHA handles book processing, creates records of all available books, and provides a user interface for the electronic library.
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)
The Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) allows users to search the library’s collection from anywhere. Together with the e resources, OPAC forms MDFCSC’s complete electronic library.
